Pumpkin With Kid Friendly Elephant Toothpaste

Good evening scientists! We had a great time getting messy today with another Spooky Science Experiment perfect for some Halloween Fun! 🙂 Enjoy with your little scientist today.


Pumpkin Pie Pumpkin (Carved into a Jack-o-Lantern)

Safety Googles

Disposable Gloves (We used Nitrile Gloves)

Hydrogen Peroxide (Antiseptic in the Medical section of the store)

Dish Soap

Food Coloring

Warm Water

Instant Dry Yeast (Packet or 1 1/4 tsp)

Measuring Spoons & Cups (Dry: 1 tsp, 1/4 tsp, 1/4 cup dry & Liquid Measuring Cup)

Tiny Plastic Cup (We used a Bathroom one)

Spoons (For Mixing)


**Best Done OUTSIDE near a hose, this one is a MESSY one!**

**Wear your safety gear! Never eat or drink in a lab setting, and always watch your child at all times**

  1. Measure 1/4 cup of hydrogen peroxide, 1/8 cup dish soap, and 5 drops of food coloring for desired color. Mix well. Place the small plastic cup inside your pumpkin and fill with the mixture (if it overflows a bit into the pumpkin that is ok).
  2. Measure 1/4 cup of warm water and add your yeast. Mix well, set aside for about 10 minutes. It should thicken-up, look like it has bubbled, and it will smell like fermentation.
  3. Quickly pour the yeast mixture into the hydrogen peroxide mixture, and watch the results. With gloved hands try touching the foam, it will start to heat up due to the exothermic reaction.

Talking Points

When the yeast combines with the hydrogen peroxide and soap mixture it causes it to foam up. The foam is the result of a chemical reaction or chemical change (a change that can not be undone). If you try touching the foam it will be warm/hot. When the chemical reaction occurs one of the byproducts is heat or thermal energy. This is a special type of reaction called an exothermic reaction (Chemical reaction that gives off heat).
